Throughout 2026, we will be hosting a range of exciting events with staff, students, alumni, and the wider Southport community to mark 100 years at our current site.
Our History
In September 1920, KGV Sixth Form College, then known as Southport Municipal Secondary for Boys, was originally in a building named ‘The Woodlands’ and a series of disused army buildings on the north end of Lord Street.
In 1926, after special permission had been granted from Whitehall to name it after the then Monarch, it was later reopened by Lord Derby as King George V Grammar School after new buildings were commissioned at the current site on Scarisbrick New Road.
In 1979, King George V Grammar School was renamed to King George V College, becoming a mixed gender establishment and in 1982 KGV became a specialised Sixth Form provider, with the school section ceasing to exist.
Fast forwarding to the present day, KGV Sixth Form College remains a successful institution providing a wide range of qualifications for school leavers across Southport and beyond. Most recently, we have opened the Creative Arts building, which houses The George Theatre and hosts our newest music and performing arts offering. Later on in the year, we are also opening our brand new football pitches in partnership with Southport Football Club. You can read more in depth about KGV through the decades via our centenary page.
We’re incredibly proud to have such a long and rich history. Here’s to the next 100 years!
We want to hear from you!
To celebrate our 100 year anniversary at Scarisbrick New Road, we are calling out for people to submit any pictures, stories, and memories of those who have attended KGV over the last century. Whether those are personal stories or anecdotes from parents or grandparents, we’d love to hear them.
