The centre will serve learners across Sefton and the wider region who require a highly personalised, nurturing environment to thrive in further education.
Opening with its first cohort in September 2026, The Bridge has been developed to meet the growing need for high-quality local provision for Post-16 learners with complex SEMH needs.
Many of these young people find mainstream settings overwhelming or unable to meet their support requirements, placing them at risk of disengagement. The Bridge provides an alternative that enables learners to remain close to home while accessing a specialist curriculum built around their individual needs.
The two-year programme will centre on personal development, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood. Learners will benefit from small groups, trusted and consistent adult relationships and structured routines that promote emotional stability and confidence. The offer will include therapeutic interventions alongside skills development, vocational tasters and community engagement.
Michelle Brabner, CEO of Southport Education Group, said,
“The Bridge represents a commitment to those young people who need additional time, space and support to thrive. By creating a nurturing, purpose-built centre in Southport, we are offering learners not only stability and care, but a pathway back into education, community and future employment. This is a project rooted in compassion, ambition and belief in potential.”
“The Bridge has been designed around what our young people genuinely need: safety, belonging, trusted adults and opportunities to grow. This centre will allow us to meet learners where they are, build positive relationships and help them move forward with confidence. It is a place where every young person will feel seen, understood and supported.”
Sefton Council has welcomed the initiative as a vital addition to the local SEND offer for older learners.
Cllr Diane Roscoe, Sefton Council Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families, said,
“This is a wonderful opportunity to create more safe and caring spaces where young people with SEND can rebuild confidence, develop new skills and be part of their community. We’re delighted to work with Southport Education Group on this scheme and ensure students with SEND get the support and opportunities they deserve.”
The launch of The Bridge further strengthens Southport Education Group’s role as a leading education and training provider in the region. The Group oversees Southport College, KGV Sixth Form College, Compete Apprenticeships and Training and now The Bridge, demonstrating a continued commitment to inclusive education and high aspirations for all learners.
