CLASSICS & ANCIENT HISTORY THE ATKINSON, SOUTHPORT

Students from the Classics & Ancient History Department at KGV spent time at the Atkinson Museum in Southport. Students were treated to a special tour of a Vikings exhibition, run in conjunction with the British Museum, which included Viking artefacts from as far away as Russia.

The Atkinson

KGV students studying A Level Ancient History and A Level Classical Civilisation were treated to a fascinating visit to the Atkinson Museum in Southport during a recent exhibition. The students experienced a special tour of the Vikings exhibition, run in conjunction with the British Museum, which included Viking artefacts from as far away as Russia.

One of the highlights of the visit was the major hoards of Viking silver found in the North-West of England, as other more everyday objects like combs, shoes, board-games and ice-skates made from animal bones. The students were also fascinated to discover the Viking origins of place-names in our local area, including Crosby, Ainsdale, Aintree and Ormskirk. There was also the chance to dress up in authentic recreations of Viking clothing!

Theory into practise

This visit was a fabulous opportunity for our A Level Ancient History and Classical Civilisation students to directly experience historical objects from the local area. Taking learning outside the classroom enhances depth of understanding complementing learning from text books.
