SPORT

This two year BTEC Extended Diploma an excellent course for students who want to work and play hard in equal measure. It has a balanced mix of practical work and theory and variety of teaching and learning methods and assessments.

It is a really hands on course, where you will be involved in sporting activities from the start, and covers 2 different strands:
1) Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness
2) Outdoor Activities.

Students can then decide which strand is best suited to them and their career aspirations.

The course covers a wide variety of units, depending on which strand is being studied.

What will I study

Sport is enjoyed by many people all over the world, whether it’s playing, training, coaching, or supporting. But there is so much more to it than that. This course gives you the opportunity to work within the sector and to enjoy sport every day of your working career.

Completing this qualification will give you an excellent basis from which to build a career in the sector, enabling you to develop essential skills required for gaining employment, securing career progression, or progressing to further qualifications and training.

You will study a number of units including:

  • Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport
  • Sports Coaching
  • Assessing Risk in Sport
  • Fitness Training & Programming.

The Sport course provides the perfect foundation for any student interested in studying a sports related degree at university such as Physiotherapy, Sports Equipment Development and Leisure Activity Management which previous students have progressed on to.

Entry Requirements

2 GCSEs at grade 5 or above and 3 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths or English.

Career advice

A sport coach will work with teams and individuals teaching them sport skills and helping to improve their performance.

Annual Salary:
£14,000-£35,000

A sports physiotherapist specifically diagnoses and treats sports injuries.


Annual Salary:
£23,000-£45,000

Nutritionists use their knowledge of health benefits of diet and nutrition and will communicate this scientific food knowledge to others.

Annual Salary:
£24,000-£37,000
