A Level

This two year A Level course covers a broad base of Fine Art. You will be introduced to a wide variety of possibilities which will help you develop your own practice as an artist.

As well as painting and drawing, you will be able to explore and experiment with other media including printmaking, sculpture, photography, digital manipulation and appropriate combinations of media.

What will I study

Choosing to study A Level Fine Art will give you the opportunity to work in an expressive and personal way, whilst engaging with both social and cultural issues. Throughout the course you will be expected to develop an open and exploratory approach to your work and to develop you own informed opinions, with an increasing awareness of contemporary issues and industry level practice. The visual arts make a major contribution to the UK economy and this course will give you a head start in developing the creative problem-solving skills that you will need to succeed in it.

As well as painting and drawing, you will be able to explore and experiment with other media including printmaking, sculpture, photography, digital manipulation and appropriate combinations of media. Many of the skills you will learn will also provide you with a good basis for other visual art areas such as Interior Design, Product Design and even Art History.

The Art & Design department is located within KGV’s Creative Arts Building with some very specialist facilities for our creative students. The building includes two spacious and bright fine art studios, a photography studio, a dark room, a textiles studio, and multiple mac suites kitted out with the latest graphics editing software. All are equipped with everything you’ll need to produce professional pieces of work and are available for all Art students to use both inside and outside of teaching hours.

Many of our past students have gone on to become successful full-time fine art practitioners having studied at Glasgow School of Art and the London College of Art. Others have used their Fine Art knowledge to go on to work in Architecture, Gallery curation, creative media, television production, illustration, and the graphic design sector. Recent university destinations have included Edinburgh University, Leeds College of Art, University of Central England and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Entry Requirements

Standard

5 GCSEs at grades 9 - 5 and or including, English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above.

Course Specific

You will need a grade 4 or above in an art based subject .

You can study 3 a levels or a combination of 2 a levels and 1 btec subsidiary (a level equivalent).
