FURTHER MATHS
A Level

The further maths course consists of A level Maths in year 1 followed by A level Further Maths in year 2. This means at the end of 2 years you will have achieved 2 A levels. Further Maths therefore counts as 2 of your A level chocies. You can choose to study this alongside one other A level or A level equivalent, or alongside 2 other courses. You do not need to also apply for A level Maths.

The course is made up of Pure Maths (algebra, graphs, trigonometry and Calculus), and a choice of 2 of Mechanics, Statistics or Discrete Maths. If you are considering a career within the mathematical field there is no greater way than to demonstrate your skills and abilities than with Further Maths.

What will I study

You will build upon the knowledge that you will gain from A Level Maths and take your skills that little bit further. In A level Further Maths you will develop your understanding of Calculus which is an essential skill for industries such as Engineering, Business Studies and Economics. The statistics element of the course can be useful when doing further study in Psychology, Medicine and Economics. Ultimately, by studying Further Maths you will gain valuable skills than can help you with degree level study and your future career.

The A Level Further Maths course is made up of Pure Maths (algebra, graphs, trigonometry and Calculus), and a choice of two of the following: Mechanics, Statistics or Discrete maths. You will complete A Level Maths during your first year where you will then progress onto Further Maths for your second year.

Entry Requirements

Standard

5 GCSEs at grades 9 - 5 and or including, English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above.

Course specific

You will need a grade 7 or above in Mathematics, but we recommend a grade 8 or above.

You can study 3 a levels or a combination of 2 a levels and 1 btec subsidiary (a level equivalent).
