Love Literature!

Love Literature!

Texts about love are our first point of call for A level English Literature, so to get your mind thinking about this, please read this Guardian article highlighting the key ideas about the love genre summarised in it is a great introduction.

Knowledge of literary terminology is very important in A Level English Literature in order for students to explore how ideas and meaning are shaped by the writers of the texts studied. So, in addition to the reading task, take a look at the following list of literary technique terminology and research any that you are not sure of:

  • Extended Metaphor
  • Pathetic Fallacy
  • Symbol
  • Motif
  • Epizeuxis
  • Sonnet
  • Blank Verse
  • Soliloquy
  • Frame narrative

If you fancy getting ahead of the game: read Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (Penguin Classics edition). You will study this text after October Half Term, so it’s vital to be prepared.

Snap Revision have an excellent Channel on YouTube. There's plenty for you to look at on there which will really help, but there's 3 videos we'd highly recommend:

1. Here’s one on how to identify and discuss Shakespeare’s (and other poets’/playwrights’) use of metre (iambic pentameter and other variations) – how writers structure their texts through rhyme, rhythm and other devices becomes increasing important at A Level:

Shakespeare: Metre

2. The next video is about writing effective A Level essays:

How to Write an A* Essay

3. The last one we’d recommend is this short video about effective poetry analysis – as this will be the first literary form that we will study together in September it’s a good idea to be prepared for the expectations of A Level poetry analysis:

Introduction to Analysing Poetry

Trips and Visits!!! Theatre trips to see dramatic performances of the key texts are very important in English Literature. Where restrictions and guidance allows, we hope to go to see our drama texts, Othello and A Streetcar Named Desire at the theatre.

Furthermore, we are always on the lookout for any other course-related trips and activities that you may wish to take part in. Let us know if there's something you'd like your group to go and see, we're all for enriching your time here at KGV Sixth Form College.
