TOP athletes from King George V College have won prizes in a national sports championship.

Year 12 students Jack Hales and Oliver Ravenscroft recently took part in the AoC Sport National Championships in Nottingham.

The event - which saw the talented pair competing against hundreds of students from across England and Wales - was run by AoC Sport, the lead organisation for sport and physical activity in colleges and a subsidiary of the Association of Colleges.

Jack, 17, from Birkdale, competed in the squash tournament, whilst Oliver achieved individual silver for golf.

An Advanced Level BTEC Sport student at KGV, Jack has been playing squash for two years and practises at KGV Sports Academy as well as at Southport and Birkdale Cricket Club.

The former Birkdale High student said; “I’m really excited to have won this place in the National Finals. It was a fantastic experience to compete against players of national quality at such a big event and I felt proud to represent King George V College.

“I really enjoy sport at KGV; I feel like I have made good progress and would definitely encourage any budding sports students to come here because the opportunities at the KGV Sports academy are brilliant.”

Jack also plays badminton twice a week, and aims to do a three year course in Sports Coaching and Development before doing a PGCE to become a teacher at Edge Hill University.

Oliver, also a former Birkdale High student, added: “I was really excited to compete against some of the best golfers in the country. The regionals were tough so I was anticipating an even higher standard at Nationals.”

Laura Rummens, BTEC Sport Course Leader at KGV, said: “Our students performed fantastically throughout the weekend and showed once again that KGV is a dominating presence within college sport.

“This is a fantastic achievement for these students competing against the best student athletes in the country. This year was exceptionally tough and both students showed incredible ability and resilience during the competition.”
