BTEC A LEVEL EQUIVALENT IN APPLIED SCIENCE AT KGV

This course explores a range of theories from each of the scientific disciplines, complimented with extensive opportunities for practical work to consolidate this theory. From the microscopic (microbiology) to truly massive (astronomy) and all of the molecules in-between (Organic chemistry)

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Whilst doing Applied Science at KGV, you will study a range of the different science disciplines. In the Biology aspect of the course, you will study cells, cell differentiation and tissues including the use of optical and electron microscopes; Microbiology, the use of aseptic technique and the culture of microorganisms. In the Chemistry aspect of the course, you will look into titrations and analytical chemistry, and organic chemistry including the preparation of aspirin. In the Physics aspect, you will study Astronomy and energy transformations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You can choose to study Applied Science as part of a mixed programme where you study 3 subjects from a combination of two A Levels and one BTEC A Level Equivalent qualification. You will need a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above and 3 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including Maths or English. For Applied Science you will need a Grade 4, 4 in Combined Science and a Grade 4 in Maths. You should also check the entry requirements for all of your chosen subjects some of which may require specific GCSEs or grades.

BUILD YOUR FUTURE

The future destinations of previous students has varied enormously. Of the one cohort, this has included: Chemistry, Biology, Paramedics, Nursing, Engineering, Biomedical Science. This year, our students have applied or have been successful with securing places to: within the Armed Forces, Paramedics, Physiotherapy and Biology so far. The course develops theory in all of the science disciplines with a heavy emphasis on learning through student centred activities and developing practical skills.
