MODERN HISTORY AT KING GEORGE V COLLEGE
History is a fascinating and lively subject which uses key events and individuals from the past to influence how we study and understand other events. The course offers great coverage of European and British History. We study wars, assassinations, political coups & the collapse of an empire.
Studying A Level Modern History allows you to develop vital skills such as research, literacy, statistical analysis and critical evaluation skills. It’s a great launch-pad for a whole range of related humanities based degrees subjects.
5 GCSEs at grades 9-5 (A*-B) including English Language and a 4 or above (Grade C) in GCSE Maths. For History you will need a Grade 4 in English or English Language.
Each year we do two trips; one to study the Pendle Witches (Lancashire) and the other to Northern Ireland to study the recent ‘Troubles’.
During the Northern Ireland fieldtrip, we get the opportunity to see the impacts of a recent sectarian conflict and speak to those affected from the various communities. We have interviews and meetings with those involved in the political arena; both Unionists and Nationalists. This trip brings history alive in many ways and allows students to experience, first-hand, how conflict resolution is managed at a local national and international level.
Our History department is well resourced with online articles, journals, texts and contemporary sources from the periods we study.
