World Challenge is an organisation with 25 years’ experience of sending students on worldwide expeditions to exotic and challenging destinations. These are college trips unlike any other and students are expected to fundraise throughout their two years at KGV to cover all expenses of the trip. A World Challenge expedition is truly a once in a life time opportunity to become immersed in a new culture whilst developing essential skills to add to your CV.

In July 2015, 22 KGV Students embarked on a World Challenge Expedition to Thailand. During the two week expedition, students explored the sights of Bangkok, trekked through Khao Yai National Park and renovated a playground in a School in Surin.

Day 1:  The team arrived in Bangkok a little jet lagged but ready to explore all that Thailand has to offer.

Day 2-5: We travelled to Surin, a small town near the border of Cambodia, where we visited a school and renovated a playground. The Children we met were so happy and polite! We brought them gifts like yoyo’s, skipping ropes and notebooks and enjoyed a big game of football with them at lunch time.

Day 7-9:  The team spent 2 nights Camping in Khao Yai National Park. We trekked 4.5km through dense jungle stopping off at a picturesque water fall. When we returned to camp we discovered our tents had been unzipped by cheeky monkeys and there were deer hoof prints all over everything! Our snacks were nowhere to be seen!

Day 10-13: The team travelled by ferry to the island of Koh Samet. We stayed in Toks Beach Huts and enjoyed some well-deserved rest and relaxation time on the beach, plenty of coconuts and a few picturesque sunsets.

Day 14: We enjoyed our final day in Thailand exploring Thai culture in Bangkok. We visited Wak Pho Temples including the famous Reclining Buddha before heading to the airport to fly home

‘World Challenge provides an opportunity to help those in need whilst also developing skills such as team work, event planning and communication which look great on my CV. I’m excited to experience a different culture and discover more about myself when put under high pressure situations.’ Kate Smith – 2015 Challenger

Second year students are currently preparing for a 3 week expedition to Costa Rica which will take place in July 2016. Highlights of the trip will include climbing the impressive volcano of Cerro Ena and racing through the Monteverde cloud forest on a zip wire.

In 2017, our current first year students will embark on a expedition to Uganda - more information to follow soon.
